HOLDEN Commodore driver Rod 'Redline' Wilson drove a cautious race through heavy rain to clinch the inaugural Poolrite V8 BRute Muster championship for Australian utes at Melbourne's Sandown International Motor Raceway today.
The six-lap third leg of the final round was won by Mick 'The Don' Donaher in a Ford Falcon, followed closely by the only remaining championship contender Damien 'Ice' White, in another Falcon, but a third place 21 seconds behind the Ford pair was enough to seal Wilson's title.
"Everything was hanging on these last six laps of the season. Either Damien or I could have won the series, but he would have had to finish several places ahead to do it," Wilson said.
"In the very wet conditions I was happy to see Damien make a break with Mick Donaher and concentrate myself on a safe finish.
"I'm very proud to have won the very first Poolrite V8 BRute Muster. It's been fiercely competitive at every round and fans across Australia have given a fantastic reception to the concept of racing near-standard V8 utes.
"Also, I'm doubly proud because my company has supplied all the Pirelli 'control' tyres for the series, so I have been able to serve my fellow competitors. It's been a dream experience."
White said: "I'm very happy with what my team has achieved. It's been a hard series with many individual winners, achievements and setbacks, so second is no disappointment."
The Poolrite V8 BRute Muster will return in 2002 with 32 confirmed Ford and Holden entries for six rounds, starting at the Clipsal 500 meeting in Adelaide in March.
