A FORD driver claimed claimed the honor of fastest qualifier when Australia's new ute racing category took to Bathurst's Mount Panorama circuit for the first time today.

Melbourne television reporter Grant Denyer, 23, topped the timesheets with a lap of 2 minutes 44.72 seconds in a Ford Falcon XR8 ute, ahead of 14 other V8-powered Falcons and Holden Commodores.

Another Falcon driver, Damien White, was second fastest ahead of the Commodores of Rod Wilson and Gary MacDonald.

Denyer picked his opportunity between rain showers to set the fastest time by a margin of almost 0.9 seconds.

"The track was dry at the top of the mountain and wet at the bottom, but I managed to find a relatively dry lap, held my breath and went for it. This is my first pole in the V8 BRute series and to achieve it at Mount Panorama is the best feeling," Denyer said.

Although he qualified first in the utes' debut Bathurst appearance, Denyer will start only fourth on the grid tomorrow for the first of three 6-lap races in the RM Williams V8 BRute Muster.

Starting positions for V8 BRute Muster races are set by a post-qualifying ballot among the drivers and pole was drawn by the fifth-fastest driver, Ian McAlister (Falcon).
