BREEZE EXTENDS G50 CUP POINTS LEAD AT CROFT

Round 12 of the Michelin Ginetta G50 Cup at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire this afternoon, Saturday, 19th June, gave Total Control Racing's Carl Breeze the opportunity to break into double figures for his season's podium tally and also increase his lead at the top of the championship.

With the title battle finely poised between Breeze and chief rival Frank Wrathall, the TCR racer knows finishing ahead of his closest challenger is of paramount importance. To that end, although disappointed to have qualified fifth on the grid for this afternoon's encounter, Breeze made sure he started ahead of Wrathall.

Moving into third place on the opening tour, Breeze never looked back and although under increasing pressure during the final couple of laps there never looked any doubt as to the outcome. Although finishing third, the TCR ace actually took the points for second due to 'guest car' driver Stefan Hodgetts being ineligible to score.

TCR team-mate Joachim Ritter managed to stay close to the fringe of the championship top 10 even though suffering badly from an arm injury which made qualification and racing extremely difficult for the Switzerland-based Dane.

Impressively managing to lap within just eight 10ths of a second of the pole-position pace, Ritter took 12th on the grid for today's race and eventually brought his car home in 13th position to grab 11 well deserved championship points.

"It's not been a bad day at all for the team", reflected TCR team principal Lee Brookes, "It was a mystery why Carl wasn't able to take pole in qualifying but he did the right thing in the race to focus on (Frank) Wrathall, making sure he kept him behind. We're not racing the guest drivers like Stefan (Hodgetts), Wrathall is the main threat so just finishing ahead of him was a good result.

"Joachim has had a problem with his arm all weekend, it's been causing him a lot of pain and he's having to have some physio treatment before he goes on track. Considering that, his qualifying time was very good and in the race he did as well as he possibly could."

Seventh podium of season for Tordoff

ELF Renault Clio Cup front-runners Sam Tordoff and Mike Robinson each enjoyed good results during the ninth round of the 2010 campaign, the TCR pairing taking third and fifth places respectively to consolidate their championship positions.

Tordoff, who qualified third on the grid, made a much better start than returning double-champion Paul Rivett and looked well on course to finish behind pole-sitter and points leader Dave Newsham as he soaked up the pressure from Rivett. On the final lap though, Rivett used all of his guile and experience to carve open a successful passing attempt at the Jim Clark Esses.

Robinson held fourth place from the start but at the hairpin on lap one, Fulvio Mussi managed to get by to demote the TCR man to fifth. Under pressure from Lee Pattison thereafter, Robinson saw off his attentions to hold on to his placing to the chequered flag.

Saloon-car rookie James Dixon wasn't able to give an indication of his true pace in race conditions at Croft when a track-rod breakage on the opening lap, following contact, ruled him out of action. Limping back to the pits, the Kent driver was an immediate -- and highly unfortunate -- retirement.

"It's great to have another podium from Sam, he raced well and was unfortunate not to have taken second place", said Brookes, "The important thing is to keep scoring as heavily as possible and that's what Sam is doing. Mike had a good finish to the race, he's had very good pace again this weekend, and James was just unfortunate to pick up some damage on the first lap which ended his race."

Round 13 of the 2010 Michelin Ginetta G50 Cup is scheduled to get underway at 13.20 tomorrow, Sunday, 20th June, with the 14th round of the campaign following at 17.55. Round 10 of the 2010 ELF Renault Clio Cup will take place in between the pair of G50 Cup encounters at 15.20.
