GLEW AND MACDOWALL ON TOP AT SILVERSTONE
Team Pyro's Phil Glew (Tothill, Lincolnshire) and Total Control Racing's Alex MacDowall (Carlisle) headed the timesheets during official pre-season testing in the ELF Renault Clio Cup with Michelin at Silverstone National and Grand Prix circuits on 24th/25th March.
25-year-old Glew, preparing for his second season in the one-make championship after finishing third last year, set the fastest time on Tuesday, 24th March on the 1.64-mile National circuit with a time of 1m 05.088s (90.65mph average). Meanwhile on Wednesday, 25th March, 18-year-old MacDowall, also returning to the championship, took the honours testing on the full 3.19-mile GP circuit with a time of 2m 09.896s (88.51mph average).
The two-day test session, which was also shared with drivers from the Formula Renault UK Championship, was split into eight, 45 minute sessions (four per day) allowing drivers the chance to make final preparations before the opening two rounds which take place at Kent's Brands Hatch Indy circuit on April 4th/5th.
Day one saw drivers testing on the Silverstone National circuit, the venue for rounds 15 and 16 of the championship. Glew posted the fastest time of the day during the final session with MacDowall a mere 0.081s behind, together with Team Pyro's Aron Smith (IRL), Total Control Racing's Mike Robinson (Surbiton, Surrey) and JHR's Andrew Herron (Dromore, Co. Down) making up the rest of the leading drivers.
On Wednesday, 25th March, a day that saw changeable weather conditions providing a challenge for this season's Clio racers, it was MacDowall who made the most of the day posting the quickest time in session two closely followed by Amery's Dave Newsham (Inverness) and this season's youngest competitor 16-year-old James Colburn running in his Westbourne Motorsport Racing with SVE car. Herron, Smith and Robinson were also among the front runners as was Total Control Racing's Sam Tordoff (Leeds) and returning Clio driver Carl Bradley (Morecambe, Lancashire) in the Coastal Racing car.
Commenting on his performance, Glew said: "After setting the fastest time on Tuesday, initially the team had decided that we weren't going to test on the second day but after discovering a problem with understeer we felt it best to use the track time to resolve it. Overall it's been a positive start to the season and I can't wait for round one to begin."
Commenting after testing on day two, MacDowall, said: "The car has felt good at Silverstone, even in the wet. I'm certainly feeling confident about the opening rounds at Brands and also my chances for the title this year."
Brands Hatch Indy circuit is the venue for the opening rounds of the ELF Renault Clio Cup with Michelin on 4th/5th April. Coverage of the race held on Sunday, 5th April will be available to watch free of charge on the Renaultsport website, www.renaultsport.co.uk.
