HERRON HAPPY WITH TOP THREE THRUXTON TEST PACE
ELF Renault Clio Cup title contender Andrew Herron aims to challenge for a double podium finish during the third and fourth rounds of the season at Thruxton Circuit 10 days from now after lapping with the third fastest time during official testing at the Hampshire track yesterday, Tuesday, 14th April.
Lying in sixth position in the championship standings following the opening two races of the 2009 campaign at Brands Hatch in Kent just over a week ago, the 20-year-old from Dromore in Co. Down was in very good form at Thruxton yesterday for the official pre-event test.
After getting adjusted to the 2.35-mile circuit during the first 45-minute session, and also making a conscious effort to minimise the amount of running in order to keep his JHR Developments-run Clio as fresh as possible for the next race meeting on 25th/26th April, Andrew then utilised some newer tyres during session two where he posted a best lap of 1m 24.162 seconds (100.77mph).
Placing him third overall on the combined timesheets for the day, the Northern Irishman was very pleased with the performance, especially since he was actually delayed on the laps which would have given best performance from his tyres. To still end the test just over a 10th of a second away from the top of the times was an impressive effort.
The Brian Herron Contracts-backed racer commented: "In the first session we just trundled around on old tyres basically to get adjusted to the track again. We didn't want to do too many laps to keep the car as fresh as possible for the race meeting.
"We put some decent tyres on for the second session and went much quicker although we missed the optimum slot for our fastest time due to a lot of traffic. I did my best time of the day on my fifth lap on the new tyres which meant I'd already used the best of them. To still be just over a 10th of a second off the top of the times though was good, I'm pleased with that."
Thruxton, which is situated less than 10 miles from Hampshire town Andover, plays host to the third and fourth rounds of the 2009 ELF Renault Clio Cup the weekend after next, 25th/26th April. JHaving enjoyed good success at the track in the past -- including second place during round eight of the SEAT Cupra Championship last year -- Andrew sees no reason at all why he can't challenge for a brace of podium finishes, and potentially his first victory of 2009, when the championship resumes 10 days from now.
"I'm definitely looking forward to the next two rounds", added Andrew, "My aim is for a double podium and, ideally, a couple of wins if possible. We need to have a strong weekend to keep the title challenge on track. Obviously it'll be tough, it's going to be very tight between the top few drivers, but I think we should have something up our sleeve and we should be fast."
Qualifying for the third and fourth rounds of the Renault Clio Cup will take place at 11.15 on Saturday, 25th April, with the first of the weekend's races getting underway at around 16.25. Round four will follow at approximately 12.55 on Sunday, 26th April, and will be screened live on digital satellite, cable and Freeview channel ITV4. Please check listings for further details.
