Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, July 29, 2000 ? Matt White of Oakville, Ontario scored today his first win of the season in the fourth round of the Canadian Formula Ford Championship held at the Grand Prix Player's of Trois-Rivieres. White, who's had a difficult start to the 2000 season recovered brilliantly today after starting from third place in the grid. White slipped into second place early in the race when he passed Jonathan Macri. White then moved ahead of race leader Didier Schraenen to take control of the race. The battle for the lead was incredibly exciting, with the top six cars nose to tail. Then, on lap five Schraenen and Macri ? who were dicing for second place ? collided in Corner One, putting both drivers out of the race. Ironically, Schraenen and Macri were, before the race, on top of the point standings.
White pushed his car to the limit, because behind him Frederick Martel was slicing through the field. Martel passed his teammate Martin Guimont for second place on lap eight. Behind them, Marc De Vellis was also charging hard. He climbed up to fourth place but had to protect his position from Gerry Kavanaugh and Eric Paradis.
Near the end, Martel managed to gain some ground on White but it was too little, too late. White crossed the line in first place, winning the third Pro Formula Ford race of his career. Martel arrived in second place, followed by Guimont, De Vellis, Aube ? who nicely recovered after missing a braking point and doing a U-turn ? Kavanaugh, Ryan Horses and Isabelle Roy.
1st place - MATT WHITE, Young Drivers of Canada, Van Diemen
"What a relief ! It's been tough so far this season so I'm really happy with this win. I knew it would be a crazy race but luckily the action all happened behind me ! For once, I've been able to drive a clean race and not been hit by other drivers. "
2nd place ? FREDERICK MARTEL, Maître Saladier, Vector
"It's really great ! I'd like to thank Mauro Lanaro's team because they did a fantastic job. It's been difficult this season with all kinds of mechanical problems. It's really great to finish second here in Trois-Rivieres. "
3rd place ? MARTIN GUIMONT, Digidyne, Vector
"I could not do much better. After just a few laps my engine started to flutter. The temperature went through the roof and I was forced to take it easy... I expected that Martel and White would battle it out so I could catch them but that never happened. "
Round 5 of the series will be held tomorrow morning, again as part of the Grand Prix of Trois-Rivieres.
