TEAM PETRONAS SYNTIUM OPEL WINS AGAIN IN SOUTH AFRICA

Team Petronas demonstrated again that they are the only team capable of taking the challenge to the 1999 championship winning Nissan Primeras in the Bankfin South African Touring Car Championship (BTCC). The twin Petronas Syntium Vectras ran home for a majestic Opel 1-2 victory on Nissan's home track here at Kyalami today.

Deon Joubert, absent from the podium this year, turned on a stunning performance by claiming his first BTCC pole position since 1996. Joubert appeared to be lagging behind teammate Shaun Watson-Smith so far this year, but relinquished nothing d uring the race and won in style.

Watson-Smith, starting from fifth position on the grid, had his work cut out. Before taking his final position, he had to wrestle past the two works Nissans of current champion De Villiers and Vos, reminding them both of his ability to outrace them when required.

In only their second season with brand new cars built from scratch at its base in Port Elizabeth, Team Petronas Syntium Opel has now developed itself to become serious championship contenders.

"This victory will go a long way towards reminding South Africans of Petronas' presence in their country," said Team Petronas Principal, David Wong this morning.

"Nothing comes without hard work and dedication and I'm very proud of all the boys achieving this landmark result."

Team Petronas Syntium Opel now head to Joubert's home town of Cape Town for rounds 9 and 10 on May 27.
