Marking its third year as a supporting event for the American LeMans Series, the Star Mazda Series will participate in nine ALMS events in 2001, including the season-opener at Texas Motor Speedway, March 3-4, 2001. Racing continues two weeks later with a return to the 12 Hours of Sebring event, March 16-17, 2001. While the ALMS travels to Europe, the Star Mazda Series will take a break until the July 21-22, race at Sears Point. August is busy with three races slated, beginning Aug. 4-5, at Portland. Teams then head east for two races in Canada; the first Aug. 18-19, at Mosport; followed a week later (Aug. 25-26) at Mt. Tremblant, near Montreal. The Laguna Seca race is set for Sept. 8-9, with the last two races slated in October: The Star Mazda Series will join ALMS for the Petite LeMans weekend, Oct. 5-6, at Road Atlanta, and then wrap up the season at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Oct. 20-21. "Our relationship with ALMS continues to be mutually rewarding," said Star Mazda Series administrator Gary Rodrigues, who has overseen the series' successful 10-year growth. "I'm proud to have been with this racing organization since its inaugural year, and I appreciate the testing opportunities our drivers have with teams like Tom Milner's BMW Team PTG and World Speed Motorsports' Rising Star Pro Formula Atlantic program." In addition to the relatively low entry cost for a high-powered, open-wheel race car, drivers like its low operating costs and reliability ($39,900 turn-key), along with the stable design and competition rules. Case in point: the engine. Since the debut of the Formula Mazda car in 1991, the chassis still utilizes the 170hp Mazda 13B powerplant that many claim can competitively run three to four years between rebuilds. On average, Formula Mazda events boast starting fields numbering more than 40 entrants per race. In less than 10 years, Formula Mazda racing has risen from almost stepchild-like status in the world of amateur and semi-pro road racing to become one of the most prolific and successful entry-level, open-wheel spec chassis in North America. <pre> 2001 Star Mazda Series Schedule DATE LOCATION RACE WINNER March 3-4 Texas Motor Speedway Scott Bradley March 16-17 Sebring (with 12-Hours) July 21-22 Sears Point Raceway Aug 4-5 Portland International Raceway Aug 18-19 Mosport Park Aug. 25-26 Mt.
