Smokin' Buckeye's title defense starts at Indianapolis Raceway Park

Columbus, Ohio - The Ohio State University Formula Lighting Team will compete against ten other universities at the Indy Electric Classic on August 13. The race, to be held at the .686 mile Indianapolis Raceway Park (IRP), will mark the beginning of the 1997-1998 ABB University Spec Series Championship points season. Ohio State recently wrapped up back-to-back series championships with a victory at the Cleveland Electric Formula Classic on July 12.

The 12 lap, 8.23 mile, Indy Electric Classic will be a part of the popular weekly "Wednesday Night Thunder" program on ESPN2. Live coverage of the Classic is expected to begin at approximately 10:30 PM Eastern time, or immediately following Midget qualifying.

In order to prepare for the upcoming event, the team successfully tested at the one-third mile Columbus Motor Speedway oval on August 3. During the test session, the team tried a new set-up for the Indianapolis Raceway Park track. "We were pleased with the results of the test session and I hope that some of that speed will translate to IRP. Indianapolis Raceway Park is a special track for us because we won our first race there in 1994, and we finished second in 1995, I hope that we can continue that this year," said team leader Scott Funke.
