Irwindale, Calif. - - (January 27, 2000) It was announced today that Irwindale Speedway would add a total of six USAC open wheel events to their just-published 2000 racing schedule, five TQ midget events and one Sprint Car event. "We are very excited to reveal these additional USAC events, the TQ's and the Sprint Cars are both crowd favorites here at the Speedway. This really broadens our schedule and truly brings us closer to being USAC's western states pavement racing 'home'", said track VP Robert DeFazio.
This bolstering of the "open wheel" portion of the Irwindale 2000 schedule coincides very nicely with last week's announcement that ESPN will televise the 60th running of USAC's all-time classic Turkey Night Grand Prix as well as the October 14 USAC Silver Crown race from Irwindale Speedway. "We couldn't be more pleased," said DeFazio, "this looks like a very good year for the fans."
For the record, the additional USAC TQ Midget dates at Irwindale Speedway will be: April 22, May 13, July 8, August 26, and October 21. The added Sprint Car night will be October 14.
The announcement of television for Turkey Night is a first in the history of that enduring event (first run in 1934), "Everyone has always said that Turkey Night should be televised, and the sixtieth running will be … and from Irwindale Speedway," DeFazio noted. The nationally-famous race will be shown on ESPN2 in late prime time on Sunday night November 26.
Tickets for all 36 nights of Irwindale Speedway's racing events will go on sale on March 1, with "Opening Night 2000" taking place on Saturday, March 25.
