The qualifying mode has changed. It is now similar to F1 qualifying. One hour for all on Saturday, instead of the former mode, when each driver had one seperate lap.

The 20 year old Columbian Juan Pablo Montoya replaces Jan Magnussen who races in IndyCar now. Alexander Grau and Bernd Maylander have swopped teams.

Klaus Ludwig had a fantastic start and controlled the lead over the whole race, always keeping a distance to Gabriele Tarquini between one and two seconds. lap 2: Kurt Thiim out with engine failure. 4: Uwe Alzen spins off but can continue. 10: Bernd Schneider pit stop for new tyres. 11: Dario Franchitti pushed into a spin by Michael Bartels. 13: Nannini puncture, cross country, pits. 15: Miss Elly puncture, pits. Juan Pablo Montoya with steering problems into the pits, out. 19: H.J. Stuck is pushed into a spin by Uwe Alzen, continues and gets 12th back from Alzen. Finish: Ludwig, Tarquini, Larini

Ludwig with problems, starter failure. He has to start out of pit lane behind the field. Start: Tarquini with a perfect start, leads the race with a comfortable gap until the chequered flag. lap 1: Collision between Dalmas, Stuck and Alex Grau. Dalmas and Stuck can continue, Grau out. Stuck losing the front-hood. 2: Franchitti pits, Ludwig pits. Ludwig commented later that he did not like to chase after the whole field. 3: Montoya into the pits for a new front-hood. 5: Collision between Maylander and Danner, both continue. 7: Jorg van Ommen pits, suspension, out. 9: Alzen out with a smoking engine. 11: Alexander Wurz losing his front-hood after kicking Lehto's rear. 12: Oliver Gavin spins off, out. Manuel Reuter spins, continues. 15: Hard duels between Jason Watt, Wurz and Nannini. Watt defending his third position excellently. 16: Nannini has an excursion through gravel and grass but keeps control. 17: Stuck suddenly in sixth position!!? Larini slow, puncture. 18: Stuck engine blow up. 19: Wurz kicks Watt's rear and loses some more parts. Danner engine blow up. Finish: Tarquini, Lehto, Watt
