SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Selinsgrove Speedway officials are mourning the passing of sprint car driver Joe Whitcomb, 35, of Millersburg, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a racing accident at the Snyder County oval this past Saturday night.
"We are saddened by the tragic loss of Joe Whitcomb," said Selinsgrove Speedway co-promoter Charles Paige. "Our condolences go out to the Whitcomb family and our thoughts and prayers remain with the family during this very difficult time. Joe, his family, and his race team have been very strong supporters of Selinsgrove Speedway for the past couple of years."
Whitcomb was involved in a racing accident at the start of the second sprint car heat at Selinsgrove Speedway Saturday evening. His No. 71 sprint car flipped over in the first turn of the track and was struck by another competitor's race car.
Whitcomb was transported by Dauntless Hook and Ladder (DH&L) Company ambulance to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville following the accident.
"We want to thank the DH&L ambulance and fire crews for responding immediately to the accident scene and providing the best possible care," said Paige.
A review of track records shows that the last racing-related fatality at Selinsgrove Speedway occurred in June of 1976, when Billy Wertz of Strausstown lost his life in a sprint car crash that occurred in the third turn of the speedway.
Selinsgrove Speedway co-promoters Paige and Earl Zechman are currently discussing plans to honor the memory of Joe Whitcomb at the speedway.
