Newgarden Prepares for Team USA Scholarship With Top-5s at Mosport
BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, 14 September -- Josef Newgarden joins an illustrious list of American open-wheel talent to represent Team USA at the Walter Hayes Formula Ford Festival taking place at the Silverstone Circuit in England, November 1-2. So to prepare for the challenge, Newgarden took in a weekend of racing with the Ontario Formula Ford Challenge at Mosport, running a Formula Ford 1600 similar to what he will pilot at the Festival in American colors. Newgarden, 17 from Hendersonville, Tennessee, acquitted himself well with a fourth- and a fifth-place finish during the two rounds of weekend having qualified third for both races, despite never having driven a Formula Ford machine.
"I went to Mosport to get some seat time in the Formula Ford rather than to get a specific result. Overall, I'm really pleased with how the weekend went and with two Top-5 finishes. I think the seat time, though, was the important thing. I learned a lot about how these cars behave in close traffic, how the chassis responds to my driving style and how to fit in the car. The fit, was probably the biggest eye-opener as I learned that my arms are too long for the standard driver fit, so we can now address that issue before going to England," said Newgarden, who stands 5 foot, 11 inches.
Driving the No. 6 entry for Brian Graham Racing, Newgarden ran at the head of the field for both races that transpired without much suspense. Newgarden took a conservative approach in both outings since the goal was to gain knowledge rather than results. He has bigger fish to fry with the final weekend of the BF Goodrich/Skip Barber National Championship coming the first weekend of October at VIR where he is very much in contention for the title. With the point spread among the first four drivers within 10 points, the title has shaped up to be a winner-take-all affair.
"Thanks to everyone at Brian Graham Racing for the chance to drive their car at Mosport this weekend. They did a great job all weekend. I know that the experience here will be a huge plus at the Formula Ford Festival and I'm looking to represent Team USA well there," added Newgarden.
