Hard-working Haas scores a string of seconds

Ice racer Stefan Haas finished second four times in the latest weekend of action in the Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs - Ontario Region's 2002 Magnum Ice Race Series February 9-10 at the fairgrounds in Minden, Ontario. The resident of Etobicoke, Ontario, who drives the CanadianKarting.ca car in the stud class fought through incessant mechanical troubles that kept him busy both on and off the track.

"A brake cylinder broke, then the exhaust and then a CV (constant velocity) joint broke," Haas reported, "So I had my hands full trying to fix the car between races."

Even with the glitches, however, Haas was able to get the most out of his machine, including winning the qualifying heat on Saturday morning to secure pole position for the first race of the weekend. After that, he managed to repeatedly bring his car to the finish line ahead of most of his competitors despite the assorted mechanical difficulties.

"It was hard work driving the car this weekend and I was really sweating when I got out," said Haas. "Second is one place lower than I want to finish, but I got the CanadianKarting.ca car to the end of each race and got points, so I'm happy about that."

Although he worked hard over the weekend, he also had lots to do during the week as his car needed plenty of attention following a flip the previous weekend. Even though the car escaped relatively unscathed this time, it requires a good cleaning as Sunday's warm conditions saw the studded tires rip through the slushy ice and tear up the turf below. The work never ends.
