OCTAGON MOURNS THE DEATH OF THE ARCHITECT OF TARGA TASMANIA

It is with deep regret that Octagon announces the passing of the man referred to as the architect of Targa Tasmania, Mr John Large, who died in Sydney today at 1:00 pm.

JML, as he was universally known, gave a life time of inspired leadership to CAMS, to Australian motor sport and indeed to motor sport throughout the world - but he is particularly known for his vision, passion and leadership in the design, development and growth of Targa Tasmania that he will particularly be remembered for.

JML began his motor sport involvement as a co-driver in rallies and subsequently went on to become Australian Rally Champion Co-driver in 1975, but it was as an administrator that he has made his greatest motor sport contribution.

In 1971, he was elected to represent Western Australia on the National Council of CAMS and in 1983 he was elected President, a position he held until 1994. It was during this time that he played a major role in securing FIA World Championship events for Australia. Fittingly, John Large was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2004 for his outstanding service to Australian motor sport in a voluntary capacity over 35 years.

Octagon offers its sincere condolences to his family and many friends.
