Nakano and Morbidelli out; Trulli and Fontana in [Tues., Oct.21, 1997, 1:37PM EDT]

Alain Prost has convinced engine supplier Mugen-Honda to let him replace their protege Shinji Nakano with pre- ceeding Prost driver Jarno Trulli. The deal, struck on Sunday, is rumored to have cost Alain Prost more than a half-million dollars paid to the Japanese manufacturer.

Nakano was chosen to drive for the French team while Flavio Briatore was still owner and the team was still called Ligier. In sixteen grands prix this season, Nakano has scored two championship points, coming via sixth-place classifications in Montreal and Budapest. He recently turned down the option of being Jordan-Mugen Honda's test driver in 1998, with the hopes of securing a full-time ride at either Minardi or Tyrrell.

Trulli subbed for the injured Olivier Panis from the French Grand Prix all the way up to the Austrian Grand Prix -- a tenure of over three months. He has scored three points, coming from a great fourth-place at Hockenheim.

At Sauber, the aggrivated wrist injury which caused Gianni Morbidelli to miss the race at Suzuka has ended his year. Test driver Norberto Fontana, who subbed for Morbidelli in the French, British, and German grands prix will take over the race role. =20 ________________________________________________ Copyright =A9 1997 by John E.
