GEDDIE HEADS TO MONACO FOR PORSCHE SUPERCUP
Glynn Geddie and his Leicester-based Team Parker Racing outfit fly to Monaco this week to represent Great Britain in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.
The race, which will run in support of the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix, is set around the opulent backdrop of Monte Carlo and winds round the barrier-lined streets and harbour of the Principality, leaving the drivers virtually no room for error. It is also a very narrow circuit that features many elevation shifts and tight corners - making it probably one of the most demanding pieces of asphalt on the International motorsport calendar - and will surely provide some exciting, close racing.
The 420bhp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (Type 997) car, which Aberdeen's Geddie campaigns full-time in the Supercup's younger sister series, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB, will first be fired up in anger on Thursday for the 45-minute practice session at 17.15 local time. Friday morning will see qualifying, which be vital to the outcome of the race due to the lack of overtaking opportunities the tight, twisty street circuit has to offer, with the race commencing at 9.45am on Sunday morning for 16 laps of non-stop action. Television coverage will start at 7.45am (GMT) on Sunday morning on Eurosport.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for Michael (team mate Michael Leonard) and myself to appear on the main stage. Monte Carlo is a different world and there's always something going on so I'm really looking forward to getting there - I think it will be quite surreal! We're going to be running high downforce on the car to take advantage of the low speed corners as that's where most, if not all, of the overtaking is going to be done. It's essential to get a good, clear run in qualifying as your race can be over before it's begun and traffic in the race will be a problem but we'll see what happens - it will be a great experience whatever!"
Team Parker Racing hope to mount a full campaign in the P orsche Mobil 1 Supercup for the 2011 season.
