Following an indifferent start, which dropped his Alfa/Chev to third, West Australia's Tony Ricciardello has fought through to win the second heat of round three of the Reward Insurance Australian Sports Sedan Championship at Mallala Motorsport. "I have been having some clutch problems and it was difficult to get off the line quickly," he explained as series leader Tasmanian Kerry Baily took up the early front running in his Nissan 300ZX/Chev ahead of the Saab/Chev of Darren Hossack (Victoria).

A crash by fifth placed Queensland's Phil Crompton in his Ford Falcon exiting turn two on the second lap, forced a safety car period of three laps before racing resumed. At the restart Baily, Hossack and Ricciardello surged away with the latter having to some heart-stopping high speed speculative passing looks. Ultimately he went around the outside of Hossack at the Northern Hairpin on lap six and went under Baily two corners later.

Two laps later Hossack passed Baily for second, the latter mindful of his series points. Fourth in the end was Daniel Jameson whose Jaguar XKR/Chev started at the rear of the grid, having failed on the warm up to race one. His position was helped by the sudden demise of the Dean Randle Saab/Chev with ignition failure on lap eight.

South Australian Mick Monterosso was always handily placed to secure fifth, his Escort/Chev coming in ahead of the Mark Stinson Calibra/Chev which was delayed in the early running, getting by the Commodore/Chev of David Brenssell which finished seventh. Rounding out the top ten were the Commodore/Chevs of NSW's Fred Axisa and Rodney Woods of Victoria.
