JEFF RUSSELL SEEKS VICTORY OF A DIFFERENT KIND DURING AUTOFEST

FORT WORTH-DALLAS (April 14, 1999) - For former major league relief pitcher Jeff Russell, springtime afternoons were once filled with the sounds of baseball. Now gripping the rawhide refers to the steering wheel of a Legends Car. Russell will be among 75 drivers to race Legends and Bandolero Cars at Lil’ Texas Motor Speedway Saturday afternoon, May 1 during the Star-Telegram AutoFest featuring Pate Swap Meet.

Russell is seeking his first Legends racing victory at the Star-Telegram AutoFest, coming back from a vicious flip and barrel-roll during the summer of 1998 that destroyed his car. Russell has a brand new Legends Car sponsored by Rain Bird and Dale Bonner Chevrolet along with a new engine, all prepped for a busy 1999 campaign.

"We want to win the AutoFest Legends race so bad," Russell said. "We are going to do some testing before the weekend to get ready. Sitting in Victory Lane at the end of the day is where we intend to be."

Russell will be challenged by 1998 Texas Semi-Pro Legends champion Casey Smith, a 14-year-old from Austin, also the defending division champion at Texas Motor Speedway. Other state champions slated to compete in the 4:00 p.m. program are David Umscheid of Cedar Park in the Pro Division and Al Seeley of Dallas in the Masters Division for drivers over the age of 40. Michael Umscheid, David’s son who won five of six Bandolero features during the recent winter series at Lil’ Texas, will lead several teenagers competing in the Bandolero segment of the program.

Part of the weekend activities will be an opportunity for fans to drive the Legends and Bandolero cars. Fans who have always wanted to get behind the wheel of a race car will have their chance at Lil’ Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday, May 1 from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. No previous racing experience is necessary to participate in the driving sessions. Sessions run $50 for 10 laps in a Legends and $40 for 10 laps in a Bandolero.
