NO TURKISH DELIGHT FOR TIM BUIJS DESPITE IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE

Tim Buijs showed an impressive qualifying and race pace in this weekend's third meeting of the 2008 Mobil 1 Porsche Supercup in Istanbul. As part of the support programme of the 2008 Formula One Turkish Grand Prix, Buijs impressed many spectators as he spectacularly overtook a handful of competitors in the opening stages of the 14 lap race. But a bit of a too enthusiastic attempt in lap 5 halted his charge. After colliding with Norbert Siedler at the end of the start/finish straight, the Bleekemolen Race Planet driver had to exit the race prematurely.

FREE PRACTISE AND QUALIFYING

Buijs used Friday's free practise session to get to learn the 5.378 meter long Hermann Tilke track alongside the Bosphorus River and find a suitable set-up for his Porsche 911 GT3 car. Though the Dutchman soon got to grips with the technical and challenging track, he finished the day in 24th position, at about two seconds adrift of the fastest time of the day of Damien Faulkner.

After having examined all the data overnight, Buijs upped his game impressively in Saturday's qualifying session. The reigning Dutch Dunlop Sportmaxx Clio Cup champion improved his pace with more than a second a lap and eventually had to settle with P16, after even having challenged for a top 10 grid position for quite a while.

RACE

Having started from the eighth row, Buijs emerged as the 'man of the match' in the opening stages of the 14 lap race. By overtaking five drivers in the first four laps, the Dutchman soon eyed a top 10 position. But a bit of a too enthusiastic overtaking attempt in the fifth lap halted his charge. After trying tow overtake two competitors in one move, Buijs collided with Norbert Siedler at the end of the start/finish straight and damaged his cooling system. As a result of this, Buijs had to retire at the spot and miss out on a possible points scoring finishing position.

TIM BUIJS: "I'm really disappointed by not scoring any points and price money, as that was definitely possible today. A shame, but I'm honest enough to admit it was my own mistake. I'm very pleased with both my qualifying and race pace here this weekend. I believe that gives me good prospects for the near future. At our next race in Monaco I'll try to set things straight and deliver a nice and clean race!"
