Patrick Huisman stunts with top 10 finish in Istanbul

ISTANBUL - Patrick Huisman displayed a remarkable race performance in Sunday's fourth round of the 2008 Mobil 1 Porsche Supercup in Istanbul. Ahead of the F1 Turkish Grand Prix, 'Mr. Supercup' worked his way up from 21st position at the start to ninth place at the finish despite suffering from severe car damage after an early race incident. By finishing in ninth position, the IRWIN Racing driver added another eight points to his championship tally and now shares eighth position with his team mate David Saelens.

FREE PRACTISE AND QUALIFYING

After having enjoyed a successful test with his Porsche Carrera Cup Germany outfit at the Eurospeedway Lausitz last week, Huisman was hopeful to take the momentum into the third meeting of the Mobil 1 Porsche Supercup this weekend. On from the start of Friday's free practise though, Huisman suffered from massive understeer at the challenging 5.378 meter long track alongside the Bosphorus River. As later on in the session also a fuel pump problem arose, Huisman was forced to settle in 13th position. In Saturday's brief qualifying session things only looked to get worse for Huisman. Though the Dutchman and his IRWIN Racing team felt as if they had progressed well overnight, Huisman was only able to set the 21st quickest lap. Even though the margin to polesitter Chris Mamerow was only one second, Huisman was flabbergasted by this result. His hunch that his car suffered from a fundamental problem, which he also experienced in the previous weekends in Bahrain and Spain, only got strengthened with his qualifying performance.

RACE

Eager to turn the tide around in Sunday's 14-lap race, Huisman enjoyed a good start of the race. The first few laps however looked more like a demolition derby meeting as a Mobil 1 Porsche Supercup race. Both by overtaking some competitors and benefiting from several collisions, Huisman quickly worked his way up through the field. At the end of the first lap the Dutchman had already gained six positions. His luck would not last long though. A seemingly harmless spin of Nicolas Armindo had its effects on Huisman race. After the Frenchman spun, he rolled back towards one side of the track, leaving Huisman no chance to avoid contact. With a crooked roll bar, a heavily damaged rear end of his car and a missing door, Huisman continued his charge. And not without result: the four times champion managed to keep up his pace and finish the incident-packed race in ninth position!

PATRICK HUISMAN: "I'm happy to have finished in ninth position after such a crazy race. If it would not have been for all the chaos I would probably not have been able to make a fist. As the roll bar of the car is heavily damaged my car is beyond repair. A shame, but maybe also a blessing in disguise. As I will get a new chassis for the next races, I hope we've also get rid of the fundamental problems we had. I'm sorry for the guys in the team who will have to work really hard this upcoming week to get the new car ready in time for our next race in Monaco. I'd love to pay them back for their effort by giving them something to cheer about in Monaco!"
