France - Another Opel victory in ice racing... 14.12.97
Opel Team France scored another victory in this winter’s Andros Trophy ice racing series when Yvan Muller took his second consecutive win at the wheel of the Opel Tigra V6. But the weekend’s racing at the Andorra circuit of Pas de la Case saw the Opel team making a tactical sacrifice to put all of its efforts behind Muller’s success.
A component within the six-speed gearbox broke during the practise sessions and after inspection of the other car’s components, it was decided to continue just with the Tigra for Muller, which sidelined the other Opel drivers: Markku Alen, James Ruffier and Dany Snobeck, together with the semi-official car of Rene Arnoux and Jacques Laffite. As the series scoring system counts the best six scores from seven scheduled events, Opel effectively played its ‘joker’ card for Muller, aiming to cure the gearbox problem before next weekend’s racing at l’Alpe d’Huez and so give the other drivers their chance for success during the remaining five races.
Muller again placed the Tigra on pole position for the final after taking wins from both of his heats. He converted the front row starting place into another win and a six points advantage at the top of the series points tables.
