Peugeot and Laurent Aiello Dominate Opening STW Race

Hockenheim. In front of 42,000 spectators, Peugeot pilot Laurent Aiello celebrated a foreseen victory at the opening race of the STW Cup at Hockenheim. From pole position he secured his start to finish win in both, the sprint and the race. As easy as it looked from outside, Laurent explained that in the middle of the race he had vibration problems. He's learned since that it's a typical Hockenheim problem.

Aiello's triumph is not so great that no one else has a chance. Five seconds behind was "Smokin' Joe" Winkelhock and that looks good for BMW for the next race at Zolder. "If Aiello was really giving 100%, and he assured me he was, then I'm hopeful about Zolder."

Local boy Winkelhock had a poor start at the sprint and had to start from fourth position in the race. A great start in the race allowed him to squeeze past team mate Johnny Cecotto at the first curve.Third placed Cecotto complained of the incident where Christian Danner nearly lost it on a corner and could have pushed the faster, overtaking Cecotto out of the race.

Defending champions Audi had to be content with a sixth place behind Marco Werner's Honda. Audi driver Kris Nissen drove into Christian Abt's Audi and works Audi driver Emanuele Pirro could only manage a ninth place. Audi Sport Chief Dr.Wolfgang Ulrich promised they would be analyzing it all for Zolder. The front-wheel-drive Audi ended in 11th place.
