Sports-car driver Hans Stuck of Austria is leading an Arctic adventure in the Canadian North this week. He is working with his personal sponsor on the Fulda Challenge, in which teams of leading European athletes battle the elements in a series of chilly sports contests.

The tour started in Edmonton, Alta., on Feb. 17. The first two stages of the event, a kart race and an ice race with BMW M coupes, were won by the Austrian team.

"I was totally surprised at the reception from all the people working for us at the ice race," Stuck said. "Thanks to Colin and his friends, who made everything just perfect for us, and to the guys for letting me drive their cars. The highlight was that I could do some laps with some real ice-race cars with special spikes on. I drove some VW Golfs and a Nissan ZX with 300 horsepower. It was wonderful! If it works out, I'll be back for racing next year."

Stuck noted the tour food is tasty, too, adding "special thanks to the guys from the German bakery for their great bretzels."

The Fulda Challenge is now en route to Whitehorse, Yukon, and the Arctic Circle. We'll provide updates when Hans reaches the next telephone!
