Sharp with Double win at Croft
Camberley's 18 year old Ginetta G50 Cup racer Tom Sharp took his maiden championship wins last weekend at Croft, after qualifying his IDL prepared car on pole for the first time this season. The Michelin Ginetta G50 Cup is a championship that supports the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.
On Sunday the weather improved greatly along with the temperatures so getting heat into the tyres in the races was not an issue
The Ginetta guest car saw Stephan Hodgetts, son of former British Touring car champion Chris Hodgetts make his first appearance in the series. Other guest drivers include 2007 British GT champion John Barnes and inaugural Ginetta G50 Cup champion and Ginetta factory driver Nigel Moore for a one off event.
Qualifying got underway with Tom Sharp taking his maiden pole position with the fastest time of the weekend and a new circuit record just ahead of guest driver Stephan Hodgetts.
After qualifying Sharp commented "I didn't think it was that fast but the car drove brilliantly"
The qualifying session and race on Saturday were run in cool conditions with rain in the air which meant that tyre management was key as it was taking 2-3 laps to fully get the heat in the tyres which would then only last for a short while. Sharp was so on it that his 2nd fastest time was still quicker than 2nd place.
In race 1 poleman Sharp and Hodgetts both made good starts from the grid and quickly began to get away from the field but it was Sharp who took top honours with a lights to flag victory ahead of Hodgetts and series regular Carl Breeze.
Race two on Sunday was run in much warmer conditions but the race followed the same pattern with the leading pair braking free of the chasing pack. Sharp and Hodgetts were nose to tail for the entire race until lap 10 were an attempt to overtake into Sunny In Hodgetts ran wide letting Sharp re- take the lead and take a second win of the weekend.
In race 3 the reverse grid meant that Sharp started in 6th place and he was instructed to manage the race and bring the car home which he did in 5th place
With a solid points scores from the weekend Sharp has retaken third place overall in the drivers' championship.
The championship now has a summer break with the next races at the Norfolk circuit of Snetterton on August 7th & 8th.
