Lesley Reynolds (Airnet Travel Mygale) and Ian Parsons (Nu-Phalt Van Diemen) shared victories in round three of the South African Formula Ford Championship in the Vodacom Power Tour races at AA Kyalami today.
Englishman Parsons finished first on the road in the first race, but was penalised 30 sec for a jumped start, handing Reynolds his maiden win in the category.
Parsons and Robert Wolk (AfintaPart Mygale) had fought a tough battle for the lead for most of the race, with pole sitter Wolk holding the upper hand until he spun on lap four. That left Parsons to run unchallenged to the line, although Reynolds kept a watching brief about 3 seconds behind.
Another Brit, Steven Morris (InvestChem Mygale) came through to finish third ahead of David Veringa (Sabat Mygale), Cristiano Morgado (Buondi Cafe Mygale) and Donavan Howard (Associated Auto Mygale). Parsons was classified tenth in the final standings.
Race two proved to be a good three-way fight between Parsons, Wolk and Veringa, with Wolk leading the first two laps before being passed by Parsons with a good move. Veringa was never far behind in third, but was unable to mount a challenge.
Morris finished seven seconds behind Veringa in a lonely fourth, with Reynolds making a poor start and having to fight his way back to fifth, while Paulo da Cunha (DCM Line Boring Van Diemen) took sixth. Morgado finished a close sixth on the road, but was also penalised 30sec for a jumped start.
First overall: Robert Wolk
"It is nice to take the overall win, but disappointing to not cross the line first in any of the races. I messed up in the first race when I spun, but in the second Ian pulled quite a hard move. Anyway, overall it was quite a good day."
Second overall: David Veringa
"We battled in the first race after a poor qualifying. The car was well set-up, but when we put our new tyres on for qualifying it was a handful. It was pretty much the same in the first race in addition to a brake problem that we had, but we got it right for the second and were right on the pace."
Third overall: Lesley Reynolds
"It was great to get a win under the belt even if it was by default. The car was handling perfectly and it was my best race in the category. Unfortunately, I messed up at the start in race two when I missed second gear and that dropped me back a bunch of places. It was fun to fight my way back through the field and pass a few cars though!"
Championship points after round 3:
1) Ian Parsons 40
2) David Veringa 37
3) Robert Wolk 36
4) Lesley Reynolds 28
5) Brett Maybery 22
6) Steven Morris 14
Points scoring: 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. One point each for first race pole position and fastest lap of the day.
