Reigning South African Formula Ford champion Robert Wolk (AfintaPart Mygale) extended his series lead from seven to 12 points in round three of the Vodacom Power Tour at the Phakisa Freeway yesterday.
Wolk was in dominant form, taking pole position for both races and driving to comfortable wins both times to notch up his third and fourth victories of the season.
Championship rival, Englishman Steven Morris (InvestChem Mygale), took the runner-up position both times, but he could not take the fight to Wolk as he had done in the season's opening races.
Jayde Kruger (Wap Alto Mygale) appeared set for his best result of the season after qualifying in pole position and running second for all but the final lap of the first race. Sadly for him, a broken suspension on the last tour ended his chances. The second race was no better for him, as a clash with two other drivers on the eighth lap spelt an early end to his race.
Sabat Batteries Van Diemen driver David Veringa went into the meeting tied on points with Morris in second place, but he only managed fifth on the grid. A solid drive saw him attach to the rear of Morris's car in race one, finishing just one second in arrears to take the final podium position.
Race two was not as productive for him as he was also involved in the lap eight clash with Kruger and Sean Pettersen, and was also forced into retirement.
Armani Jamrozinski (Diesel Van Diemen) returned to the series after competing in the UK last season. He qualified fourth on the grid and held the position in race one, but he went one better with a third place finish in the second. In race, one he led a superb five-car battle that raged for most of the race.
Donovan Howard (Wap Alto / Associated Auto Mygale) pushed Jamrozinski hard in race one as he continued his good form to finish fifth, but in race two he could not repeat the pressure, finishing four seconds behind Jamrozinski in fourth place.
Martin Robinson (Hydromobile) finished sixth in both races to climb to fifth in the championship. In the first, he was glued to Howard's tail while having to defend his position from Lesley Reynolds (Wap Alto Mygale), but in the second race Reynolds found a way past and this time Robinson kept him honest to finish just 0,5 sec behind.
