Formula Ford Championship - Round 10, Kyalami, Midrand.
Robert Wolk (AfintaPart Mygale) and Ian Parsons (Nisa Today's Van Diemen) shared wins in the final round of the South African Formula Ford championship in round ten of the Vodacom Power Tour at Kyalami in Midrand today.
In front of a huge crowd, newly-crowned champion Wolk started the first race from pole position and went unchallenged to win by a comfortable 3 seconds.
Ford development driver Jennifer Murray (Ford Racing / Ford Credit Mygale), after two strong races in the UK recently, produced her best performance of the year to qualify in second place. She chased Wolk early on, and held a comfortable second place for most of the race before being caught and passed by David Veringa (Sabat Batteries Van Diemen) at around two-thirds distance.
Parsons, whose Van Diemen suffered from a faulty ECU robbing it of some of its top speed, also caught Murray in the final stages, before finding a way past on the last lap to clinch third place.
Leslie Reynolds (Airnet Travel Mygale) came home in a distant fifth ahead of Paulo da Cunha (DCM Lineboring Van Diemen).
Wolk withdrew from the second race, as he had to catch a flight, leaving Murray to start at the head of the field. However, it was not to be her day as her car's fuel pump failed on the warm-up lap, ending her challenge before it even began.
That left Parsons and Veringa to fight for the lead. The pair swapped positions a few times early in the race before Parsons opened up a small gap, which he held to the flag. Second place was enough to secure Veringa the runner-up position in the championship, while Parsons had to settle for third.
Jade Kruger (FAG Mygale), who finished eighth in race one, and Reynolds fought a tough duel for the entire distance, changing position on almost every lap. At the flag it was Kruger who took third ahead of Reynolds. Martin Robinson (HydroMobile Mygale) finished fifth after starting from the back of the grid, with Da Cunha taking sixth.
Ian Parsons - 1st Overall: "On the whole it was a good weekend. In the first race we had an ECU problem, which cost the car straightline speed. We fitted a new ECU for race two, and it was much better. I am glad that we showed them in the second race that we could win. It was nice to win the last race of the season and take my second overall win of the year.
"Although it has been a tough year on many fronts, I have really enjoyed racing in South Africa. I can see how easy it is to come and live here. I have made many good friends, and will remember my time here with good memories."
David Veringa - 2nd Overall: "I battled this weekend. For some reason we can't get the car's set-up right on old tyres. We did not get much practice either as we had to borrow tyres, so we only found out in qualifying that we had the wrong gear ratios. I was hoping to take a win today so I am a bit disappointed to not get that, but Ian was on a real mission in the second race. My first year in Formula Ford has been great and I am looking forward to contesting it again next year."
