Despite not winning a race on the day, local hero Robert Wolk (AfintaPart Mygale) was crowned the South African Formula Ford Champion after round nine of the Vodacom Power Tour held at the East London Grand Prix circuit yesterday.
Wolk had been dominant all year, scoring nine wins, but yesterday he had to give best to David Veringa (Sabat Van Diemen) and Englishman Ian Parsons (Nu-Phalt Van Diemen), who each took a win.
Veringa, who won his first race in the series last time out at the circuit in August, qualified in pole position and won the first race by just 0.15 seconds after a titanic fight with Parsons. Parsons managed to sneak ahead with a lap to go after Veringa had led for most of the way, but Veringa fought back on the final lap to take the victory.
Wolk spun out on lap one after he and Parsons had yet another coming together. This time it happened on the pit straight, leaving Wolk to endure a wild spin on the grass that lasted for about 100 metres.
That left Jade Kruger (FAG Mygale) to take a distant third with a train of Brett Mayberry (Van Diemen), Donovan Howard (Associated Auto Mygale), and Jennifer Murray (Ford Racing / Ford Credit Mygale) close behind in fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively.
Parsons won the second race after another tough scrap, this time with Wolk, which lasted for the entire race. However, second was more than enough to secure the latter his first title after championship challenger Veringa spun on lap 3, and was forced to retire to the pits. It was Parsons' third win of the season.
A clash between Kruger and Mayberry on the final run to the line saw both cars spear off the circuit. Mayberry came off worst when his car hit the barriers, but Kruger recovered to finish fifth after spinning onto the grass.
Murray, who was right behind the clashing duo, was fortunate to avoid the spinning cars to take her first podium in the category in third place. Howard finished close behind in fourth ahead of Kruger and Allen Meyer (ETL Solutions Van Diemen).
First Overall: Ian Parsons
"It was great to win again, especially after having to miss the last round of the series. It's a pity that Robert has already won the championship, but I am only eight points behind David for second, so that will be my target in the final round."
Second overall: Jennifer Murray
"Today was a very enjoyable day of racing for me, and it was great to get my best result of the year. I don't know how I missed the cars spinning ahead of me, but somehow I managed. After a great outing in the UK recently, I am feeling really confident and am looking forward to the final round at Kyalami."
