Formula Ford Championship - Round 5, Zwartkops, Pretoria.
Robert Wolk (AfintaPart Mygale) continued his recent domination of the South African Formula Ford Championship at Zwartkops today, with two dominant victories in round four of the series, part of the Vodacom Power Tour.
Wolk started from pole position and made two good starts to lead both races from start to finish, for his fifth and six wins of the year. The victories and pole position saw him turn a one-point championship deficit into a 13-point championship lead.
Martin Robinson (Hydromobile Mygale) qualified second on a circuit he always goes well on, and then held onto the position both times for his best results of the season.
Also scoring his best results of the season, and his Formula Ford career, was Donovan Howard (Associated Auto Mygale) who finished third in both races. He started the races from fourth and sixth respectively on the grid, and then avoided any incidents to come through for the two podium results.
It was a disastrous meeting for championship leader Ian Parsons (NuPhalt Van Diemen). The Englishman qualified third and second for the two races, but endured set backs in both races.
In race one, he finished second on the road after pressurising Wolk for much of the race, but he was deemed to have jumped the start and was penalised 30 seconds, dropping him to eighth in the final classification.
In the second race, he made a good start before going off on the fourth corner while trying to relieve Robinson of second place. It dropped him to the very back of the field with a substantial deficit to the pack, but he fought his way back through the field superbly to finish in fourth place.
David Veringa (Sabat Mygale) also had a strong race after qualifying poorly. After lining up ninth and eighth on the grid, he kept his head to finish fourth and fifth in the two races, respectively.
Craig Allan (CART Van Diemen) had his best outing of the year to finish in fifth and seventh places, the latter after a great race-long dice with Jennifer Murray (Ford Credit / Ford Racing Mygale) that saw the two swapping positions regularly. Murray finished sixth in both races after two strong performances.
First overall: Robert Wolk
"The weekend started off badly when we had to change an engine during Thursday practice, but from then on it just got better. Being on pole position, I was ahead of some of the incidents behind, which made it a bit easier for me. Overall it was a good weekend with no problems, and it is nice to take the championship lead."
Second overall: Martin Robinson
"It was a great weekend for me. We found a problem with the shock absorbers prior to this event, and getting it fixed made all the difference to the car. We were competitive from the word go, with the car handling as it should. Hopefully, the rest of the season will go the same way."
Third overall: Donovan Howard
"It's just brilliant to finish on the podium in both races. The car went perfectly all weekend and I just stayed out of trouble and kept my head down. I hope now that I can keep on getting good results for the rest of the season."
Championship points after round 5:
1) Robert Wolk 77
2) Ian Parsons 64
3) David Veringa 56
4) Lesley Reynolds 35

Points scoring: 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. One point each for first race pole position and fastest lap of the day.
