Robert Wolk (AfintaPart Mygale) and Brett Mayberry (Mygale) shared the spoils in round eight of the Vodacom Power Tour's Formula Ford Championship races at a wind and dust swept Phakisa Raceway near Welkom yesterday.
Wolk qualified in pole position for race one, but it appeared as if occasional competitor Mayberry would take the first race victory as he led with just two corners to go. However, a defensive approach to the second last corner saw him lock his brakes, slide wide and lose position to both Wolk and David Veringa (Sabat Van Diemen), who finished in that order. Just one second covered the first three at the flag.
Jayde Kruger (FAG Mygale) put in a good performance to cross the line fourth ahead of a train of cars, but he was penalised 30sec for a jumped start dropping him to seventh in the final standings. His penalty allowed Martin Robinson (Hydromobile Mygale) to take fourth just ahead of Donovan Howard (Associated Auto Mygale) and Leslie Reynolds (Airnet Travel Mygale).
The second race saw Mayberry, Wolk and Veringa once again having a good fight until Wolk retired with engine problems on lap seven, leaving Mayberry to take a two second win from Veringa. Mayberry set the fastest lap of the day in the race, while Veringa moved into second place in the championship, and closed the points gap to Wolk to 29 points.
Reynolds finished six seconds behind the leaders, with Howard, Sean Pettersen (ETL Van Diemen) and Kruger all right on his tail.
Unfortunately, Englishman Ian Parsons (Nu-Phalt Van Diemen), who was second in the championship going into the event, had to sit it out after breaking his jaw prior to the race meeting.
First Overall: Brett Mayberry "I threw away the first race all on my own. I played it very defensively and stuck to the middle line, but with all the dust that was being blown about the front wheels locked up and I slid wide, allowing the others past. Fortunately, I made amends in the second race and showed what I can do. It was nice to win again, it's just a pity that I could not afford to have done the whole season."
Second overall: David Veringa "I overheated my front tyres in the first race, which slowed me up a bit and also affected my race two performance, but on the whole I am very happy to have moved into second in the championship and closed the gap to Robert."
Third overall: Donovan Howard "Third overall was a great result for me. We have been learning all year and getting stronger and stronger. Hopefully, I will finish the year with some more good results and be ready to challenge for the championship next year."
