Craven holds off Schrader to win California 200

FONTANA, Calif. (May 1, 1999) Ricky Craven streaked to victory in the NASCAR Winston West Series California 200 at California Speedway on Saturday. The Newburgh, Maine, native held off a hard charging Ken Schrader to earn his first victory in the West's oldest stock car racing circuit.

Craven, who started the race from the fifth position, took the lead on lap 73 when Schrader stopped under caution for fresh tires. While Schrader was working his way through the field in the closing laps, Craven built a solid lead that could not be erased.

Finishing third and fourth behind the NASCAR Winston Cup regulars were NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series moonlighters Rick Carelli and Mike Wallace. Mike Chase took fifth, while rounding out the top-10 were Butch Gilliland, Steve Portenga, Joe Bean, Sean Woodside and Ross Thompson.

The event was the fourth of 14 on the NASCAR Winston West Series schedule this season.
