Honda to Support First-Ever SAE Formula West at California Speedway
WARRENDALE, Pa. (5/26/2006) -- For the first time in Formula SAE's 25-year-plus history, the western U.S. student educational event will be held June 14-17 at California Speedway in Fontana, California. The west coast SAE event will be the second of the season, held after the original Formula SAE contest, just completed in Romeo, Michigan.
Honda Performance Development (HPD), the auto racing subsidiary of American Honda, will be supporting FSAE West by supplying event judges and volunteer support staff. HPD engineers Mark Crawford and Dushan Hanisko will judge the design competition at FSAE West. Hanisko is a previous participant in the eastern FSAE competition.
In addition, Honda Research & Development is a Platinum Sponsor of FSAE West, and will be supplying additional event staff. HPD and Honda R&D also will co-host a recruiting luncheon at FSAE West.
In Formula SAE, SAE International student members must conceive, design, fabricate and compete with small Formula-style racing cars. The restriction on the car frame and engine are limited, so that the knowledge, creativity and imagination of the students are challenged. More than 70 teams from around the nation and around the globe have entered Formula SAE West.
The earliest event, held in 1979, was called "Mini Indy" and was held at the University of Houston. Since 1981 the competition has been held annually under the name "Formula SAE."
"The Formula SAE competition historically has served as an excellent resource for Honda Performance Development," said Robert Clarke, president of HPD. "Nineteen current HPD associates are graduates of the Michigan FSAE event, and we believe the California FSAE will continue to grow. We're very pleased to once again be involved and to continue our support for FSAE."
Formula SAE is a component of SAE's Collegiate Design Series, which also includes the Clean Snowmobile Challenge, Mini Baja, Aero Design and Super Mileage events. The Collegiate Design Series has distinguished itself as a relevant proving ground for the aerospace, automotive and racing engineers of the future.
Dynamic events for Formula SAE West begin Friday, June 16, with acceleration and skid-pad sessions and continue Saturday, June 17, with endurance events.
"Formula SAE West, like all the other components of the SAE Collegiate Design Series, provides a hands-on learning experience, as well as promotes interaction between academia and industry," Bob Sechler, who directs the Collegiate Design Series, said,
