Podium score for Tom Coronel in ETCC race at Spa Francorchamps.
The seventh FIA ETCC race weekend was staged at the circuit of Spa Fancorchamps. On this legendary track through the Belgian Ardennes Dutch driver Tom Coronel took his first podium finish in the FIA European Touringcar Championship. This third place finish in the second race of the day comfirms the ever increasing form of Carly Motors - Team Isert. In the first of the two races the Dutch BMW driver finished in ninth place. Besides Tom Coronel Duncan Huisman also raced for the team of Carly Pellinkhof although technical problems denied him of any good results in both races.
On the eve of the races in Belgium Tom Coronel tested his inproved car at Zandvoort. "It was immediately clear to me that the car had improved a lot. On old tyres we could do laptimes of 1 minute 51 so things were looking good", Coronel said. Those technical improvements were again shown in free practice. "I think that 80% of the speed we gained is coming from the engine, the rest comes from the handling of the car. After the first session I was fifth and in the second session I moved up to second. Also in the rain it went well judging my third place, so things were fine under all circumstances.
Inbetween the sessions Coronel and his crew decided to make some changes to the car, but no improvements were found. "In qualifying we were in sixth place which was a bit of a disappointment. On raceday we went back the the old settings which proved to be the right way to go. Immediately I moved up to fifth but later on I was hit by the Volvo of Rickard Rydell. In the corner of Les Combes he just hit me on the corner of the car. I went off track and after a spin I was able to continue, although I dropped back considerably. The only thing I could do was to start all over again which I did and in the end I finished the race in ninth place", Coronel commented after race 1. With his ninth place Coronel was also to start from ninth in the second race. "The start was fine again. Some cars ahead of me were involved in a crash but I managed to avoid them and instantly I moved up to fifth place. After following the Alfa of Ruberti for some laps I was able to pass him and so it seemed I was heading for a fourth place finish. However the gearbox on Nicola Larini's Alfa Romeo failed which moved me up to third place and my first podiumplace of the year. For me it is a nice result, but of course also for the team it is a deserved reward for all the hard work they did the last few months", Coronel concluded.
Tom Coronel is supported in the FIA European Touringcar Championship by Apex, Seiko, Bertelli and McGregor.
