James Thompson and Hartmann Honda Racing extended their European Cup lead
James Thompson and Hartmann Honda Racing extended their lead in this year's FIA European Touring Car Cup, when the second of the year's three rounds was staged this weekend at Salzburgring. James Thompson claimed two second places, while Austrian Wolfgang Treml achived two fourth places in his first race weekend for the Danish team.
"We got more points than Tomas Engstrom, who is our main rival in the European Cup, and we are still leading and extended our lead and that is the most important thing for us," team owner Hans Hartmann says.
"Result-wise we couldn't perform better than the two second places for James. In comparison to the works car of Michel Nykjær our cars were 16 kilos heavier today, because they are nationally homologated, and then it was difficult to do anything about him, as his car just pulled away."
Sunday's two second places means that James Thompson now has amassed 32 points, so that he is leading the FIA European Touring Car Cup with a margin of 10 points to the second driver before the final in Italy in October. Hartmann Honda Racing's new driver, Wolfgang Treml, managed to get into seventh place in the overall standings with his two fourth positions.
"Treml did well, and working with him went very well," Hans Hartmann says. "Unfortunately we did not have the possibility to do a shake down test with Wolfgang before the race, so it was a tough beginning. Next time Treml will also get past Engstrom too."
"It would like to thank Treml, James and the entire staff. They did a fine work, and for the first time ever, we will be able to return from a race weekend without even a scratch."
