ONE APIECE FOR KOX AND GIOVANARDI AT A-1 RING WHILE MORBIDELLI ALMOST SCORES BMW's FIRST WIN

After two spectacular races, Fabrizio Giovanardi increased his point margin in the European Super Touring Cup. The series leader finished second to Peter Kox in race-one and won race-two thanks to a superb move that saw him diving inside teammate Nicola Larini and BMW's Gianni Morbidelli during the final lap. "Because of the weight handicap - he commented - my car was slower, but I did my best to keep in touch with them. I was lucky, because when Nicola went for Gianni, he made a mistake and I could profit by it. But I think I deserved it, because my strategy was a good one."

A broken clutch put Kox in troubles, forcing him to a couple of poor starts. Surviving an accident with Colciago, the Dutchman was able to recover until he won race-one; but in the second he started even worse, he found himself at the back of the field and finished involved in the pile-up at the first corner, that spoiled his chances. "It's a shame, because my car was definitely the best one today. Ok, Giovanardi will carry the 40-kg handicap again at Monza, but now he has increased his lead up to 22 points."

In six races, Giovanardi and Kox scored three wins apiece, but at the A-1 Ring, Nicola Larini and Gianni Morbidelli were tough competitors. In the second race they fought hard to win and eventually presented the success to Giovanardi in the final metres. But they are in the winning pace and at Monza they will be even more determined to score their first win of the season.

RACE-ONE. Kox had a poor start from the pole, because of a clutch problem, and Giovanardi took the lead, from Colciago and Larini. During the opening lap there was a collision at the Remus bend between Colciago and Kox; the Italian went in the gravel trap and accused: "He simply bumped me off!." The Dutchman replied: "He just cut me across, while it was clear I was faster than him." Indeed the fastest on the track, Kox jumped Larini and went for Giovanardi; the fight between them enabled Larini, Morbidelli and Naspetti to close the gap. The five leaders were all packed, but finally Kox got Giovanardi on lap 5 and built a solid margin. Soon afterwards, Morbidelli moved up to third, overtaking Larini and began to attack Giovanardi; on lap 8 De Lorenzi passed Naspetti for fifth. Kox was well ahead and went to win, while Giovanardi maintained second place, beating Morbidelli and Larini on the finishing line. Sardelli finished a good 7th; Pigoli and Gabellini classified 8th and 9th after an amazing fight and Studenic completed the point finishers. Colciago and Lucchetti retired with engine problems.

RACE-TWO. Again the clutch spoiled Kox's start and Giovanardi took the lead from Morbidelli. Naspetti and Larini clashed at the first corner, involving Sardelli who spun and was hit by Dziurka. To avoid the collision, Kox moved clashed with Bonello. The safety-car came in, while Kox pitted for repairings. At the restart, on lap 4, Giovanardi was still leading, closely chased by Morbidelli, while Larini overtook Naspetti for fourth. The latest was soon passed by De Lorenzi too. Pigoli's engine blew and Mayer pitted to change a flat-spotted tyre. The end of the race was absolutely amazing, with the four leaders that started the final lap packed within 0.7 seconds. Morbidelli dived inside Giovanardi, the two cars clashed and the former F1 driver took the lead. Larini moved up to second, passing teammate Giovanardi and in the last lap he tried to get Morbidelli as well. He was too long at the braking and had to negotiate the corner on the outside line, so that Giovanardi found a "hole" and went to win from Morbidelli, Larini, De Lorenzi and Naspetti. Well placed were Gabellini, Soli and Bernardoni. "When I clashed with Giovanardi - Morbidelli said - my car was damaged and I had to reduce my pace. Otherwise it was my race."

The Euro STC will resume at Monza, Italy, on June 10 and 11.
