ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (April 22, 2004) -The Cooper Tires Championship Series, featuring the Formula Ford Zetec Championship, Formula SCCA Championship and SCCA Sportscar Championship takes to the track at Road Atlanta, April 23-25, 2004, as part of the inaugural Drift Atlanta event.
The Zetec and Formula SCCA Championships will run Rounds Three and Four of the 2004 season, while the Sportscar Championship will contest Round One of the season. Official on-track activities commence Friday, April 23 with qualifying for all three championships.
In the Zetec Championship, the Drift Atlanta doubleheader will feature several drivers looking for the win. Andrew Prendeville, driving the No. 25 Racelink/Roos Racing Andersen Walko Racing Van Diemen Ford, and Jason Bowles, in the No. 7 JDC Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, will be looking to repeat as race winners, after winning at Sebring. Cape Motorsports teammates Bobby Wilson, driving the No. 3 Green-Keeper/RW Racing Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, and Wade Cunningham, in the No. 2 RCC/WPL/Placemakers Mt. Wellington/Turbo traders Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, along with Prendeville teammate Adam Pecorari, in the No. 28 SAI Hydraulics Andersen Walko Racing Van Diemen Ford, will also be in contention, having scored podium finishes at the season-opener.
Featuring identical Van Diemen Formula SCCA cars, the battle for race wins in Formula SCCA will be a hard fought affair. Elivan Goulart, in the No. 70 dolphinmotorsports.com/Bob Berman Formula SCCA, will be looking to enhance his championship lead after winning both rounds at Sebring. After scoring podium finishes in Sebring, Chris Meredith, driving the No. 79 MII Security Consultants Andersen Walko Racing Meredith Racing Formula SCCA, and Franklin Futrelle, in the No. 97 Meco Inc. Augusta Comprent Motorsports Formula SCCA, are sure to be in contention for the win. Joining the battle for the lead will be points front-runners Enzo Potolicchio, in the No. 22 Fondo Unico Social Comprent Motorsports Formula SCCA and Kristoffer Szekers, driving the No. 6 Dynamic Technology Inc./DocSS/GuePe Prolific Racing Formula SCCA.
Making their Cooper Series debuts, Jonathan Holtzman, in the No. 37 JH Racing Lola Sports 2000, Duke Johnson, in the No. 4 Team Duke Racing Carbir Sports 2000 and Neil Tilbor, in the No. 8 Taiyo Edge Ltd SCCA Sportscar, will all be fighting for the race win in the SCCA Sportscar Championship.
Following a full day of testing on Thursday, Wilson, of Dousman, Wisc., posted the fastest lap in the Zetec Championship with a lap of 1:24.309 (106.750 MPH). Posting the fastest time in the Formula SCCA and Sportscar were Jonathan Klein, of Long Grove, Ill., and Holtzman, of Orchard Lake, Mich., respectively. Klein posted a fast lap of 1:28.083 (102.176 MPH) in the No. 26 Nexus Distribution/Ironclad Performance Wear/Midwest Steel & Services Andersen Walko Racing Formula SCCA, while Holtzman's fast lap was 1:29.362 (100.714 (MPH).
