"BIG DADDY" TO MAKE FIRST APPEARANCE AT PENNZOIL MOTORSPORTS '99 AUTO RACING TRADE SHOW
FORT WASHINGTON, PA - DECEMBER 3, 1998. . . Much like Richard Petty is considered "The King" in NASCAR Winston Cup stock car racing, Don Garlits is considered "The King" in drag racing. "Big Daddy," winner of three NHRA Winston Top Fuel championships (1975,'85, and '86), will make his first ever appearance at the Pennzoil Motorsports '99 Auto Racing Trade Show.
Now retired as an active driver, Garlits is a popular television commentator and speaker. He has also represented several well known industry products in their marketing efforts. Garlits also operates Don Garlits' Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala, Florida. Drag racing fans consider the museum a must see attraction.
Actually Garlits retired status may change. He may be taking a page from the life of astronaut/politician John Glenn. The popular racer recently had an operation to correct some vision problems and at 66, almost, he will be attempting to renew his NHRA Top Fuel license. He has approval from his doctors.
Garlits will appear at the Pennzoil Motorsports '99 show on Saturday, January 16 and will be in the popular autograph alley from 1 p.m.to 3 p.m.. Autograph Alley allows show attendees to visit with and collect autographs from the many well known racers and personalities that appear at the three day show. Garlits will also be on the stage (4 p.m.) talking about his career and responding to questions from show attendees.
The mid-winter motorsports extravaganza will open at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 15 and continue through 6 p.m. Sunday, January 17.
During his career "Big Daddy" set dozens of track and NHRA records and recorded 35 national event victories. His first NHRA national event win came at the 1963 Winternationals and his final win came in the 1987 season opening Winternationals (Pomona, California). He was the first to break 170 mph on the quarter-mile in 1957 and he was the first to record 250 mph on the quarter-mile, that coming in 1975.
One of his famous dragsters, Swamp Rat XXX, was inducted into the Smithsonian Institution in 1987. Garlits last ran a full season of NHRA competition back in 1986.
The highly respected Garlits, considered one of the true innovators in the industry, will celebrate his 66th birthday on January 14. Some may remember a couple years back when Garlits ran for public office in Florida. Though he was popular with voters his outspoken comments are said to have cost him his chance at a political career.
