SAE International's Collegiate Design Series Features Preview of Racing's Stars of the Future

WARRENDALE, PA (3/6/2006) -- Today's engineers in racing are becoming stars in their own right. And the companies involved in racing -- motorsports and the space race -- know that competitive advantage means finding tomorrow's star engineers today, so they look to SAE International's Collegiate Design Competition.

The Collegiate Design Series challenges students to take what they've learned in the classroom and compete in a real-world setting. These students get to go beyond textbook theory by designing, building and testing the performance of a real vehicle. In doing so, they join other students in exciting and intense competitions. For more than 25 years these competitions have not only enhanced the educational experience of engineering students, but also put them in contact with career recruiters.

Within the Collegiate Design Series there are a variety of competitions:

* Clean Snowmobile Challenge, with a focus on noise and emission control.

* Mini Baja, with a focus on the off-road vehicle.

* Aero Design, with a focus on radio-controlled air craft.

* Formula SAE, with a focus on Formula-type race vehicles.

* Supermileage, with a focus on fuel efficiency.

Collegiate Design Competition events are held throughout the United States, although the teams are from universities throughout the world as well as North America.

More than 25,000 engineering students have graduated with SAE collegiate design experience and have benefited tremendously from their participation.

Clean Snowmobile Challenge

Clean Snowmobile Challenge is an intercollegiate engineering design competition that challenges engineering students to re-engineer an existing snowmobile for improved emissions and noise while maintaining or improving the performance characteristics of the original snowmobile. The modified snowmobiles are also expected to be cost-effective.

Mini Baja® consists of three regional competitions that simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges. Engineering students are tasked to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain and in the East competition--water.

The object of the competition is to provide the competitors with a challenging project that involves planning and manufacturing tasks found when introducing a new product to the consumer industrial market. Teams compete to have their design accepted for manufacture by a fictitious firm. Students must function as a team to not only design, build, test, promote and race a vehicle within the limits of the rules, but also to generate financial support for their respective projects and manage their respective educational priorities.

The Supermileage® Competition provides engineering and technology students with a challenging design project that involves the development and construction of a single-person, fuel-efficient vehicle. Vehicles are powered by a small four-cycle engine. Students have the opportunity to set a world fuel economy record and increase public awareness of fuel economy. Engines are donated by Briggs & Stratton.
