Johnny Cecotto is German Champion 1998

Munich/Nurburgring. Johnny Cecotto has done it: The BMW works driver is German super stockcar champion 1998. He started the final in the BMW 320i at the Nurburgring two points in front of Laurent Aiello (F, Peugeot). With fourth place in the sprint and race, he took the second STW title of his career in the Eifel.

"I am ecstatic", said the radiant champion. "We fought ten long hard races and have done better than anybody could have expected. The BMW 320i is a fantastic racing car. I am grateful to BMW, the BMW Motorsport Team Schnitzer and my team partner, Joachim Winkelhock - he was always there to help me whenever he could."

In front of 47 000 spectators, Cecotto improved his starting position in the sprint from eighth to fifth - directly behind Aiello. He was on his tail for all 17 laps and eventually finished in fourth place. Trailing by one point, he started next to Aiello in the 33-lap race. Cecotto immediately shook off his title rival and kept his head when Aiello starting catching up with him in the final laps of the nerve-racking final.

Schnitzer team manager, Charly Lamm, said: "Johnny drove an incredibly good race. We went for soft tyres because we wanted to get him in front of Laurent in the start phase. And our strategy worked. Michelin played a vital role in our success. We can look back at a great season with good opponents - and at the end of the day we were better. The championship means a great deal to all of us."
