Lombardi Honda Racing ready for the grand finale -- NICK WITTMER EYES THE VICTORY AND A SECOND CONSECUTIVE TITLE
Montréal (Québec), September 7, 2010.- It's this weekend at the ICAR racing track in Mirabel, that the final double-header of the Canadian Touring Championship season will be held. Leading the championship since June, Nick Wittmer plans to do everything possible to claim his second consecutive title at the wheel of his Lombardi Honda Racing Honda Civic Si. For the Montreal team, which also includes Benjamin Distaulo (looking for his first podium in the series), this outing is their opportunity to earn their second title in as many years competing in the series.
This is the second time this season that the Canadian Touring Car Championship will head to Mirabel, a track at which Nick Wittmer won for the Lombardi Honda Racing Team in July. " I've always been really comfortable at this track and our Hondas are more ready than ever ! " explains Nick Wittmer. The Montreal driver adds : " of course the main goal is to defend my championship title but the best place to stay clear of incidents or contact is at the front. I'm aiming for the victory, finishing the season with a win would be that much sweeter ".
In fact, the Lombardi Honda Racing driver currently holds a 46-point lead in the championship. He needs to finish the two races in the "Top 5" if his main rival (Torontonian Dave Ciekiewicz, in a Subaru) wins both races. " If I see that the situation isn't playing out in our favour, I'll make sure that I don't give up more than nine positions to him over the entire weekend, which means finishing in the "Top 4" or 5 in each race. Having said that, I expect us to do much better than that this weekend " adds the 2009 champion, looking for his second consecutive title.
As for Benjamin Distaulo, who knows the track well and has been on the podium there before in previous years competing in different categories, he should be able to stay towards the front of the pack. " I want a strong finish to the season and I am certain that our Honda Civic Si will be very powerful for the 2010 grand finale. I'd love to see all of our team's supporters out to cheer us on during Saturday and Sunday's races ! " confides the driver from Ville Lorraine, who currently sits in ninth place among the Super Touring drivers.
For team owner, Tony Lombardi, contesting the final races of the year on the Mirabel track is far from being a disadvantage : " the cars are ready, we've returned to the set-up from the beginning of the season that contributed to our success and Nick's victory on this track. Obviously, we don't know what will happen but we're leading the championship and we hold our destiny in our hands. I'm confident that we will have another good result this weekend on a track that Nick and Benjamin know well, enjoy, and where they have excelled in the past ".
The Lombardi Honda Racing team will be on the track as of Friday, during their practice session. The two rounds of the Canadian Touring Car Championship are part of Mirabel's "Sundown Weekend" program, to be held on Saturday at 1:45pm and Sunday at 1pm.
