Championship-winning Teams Combine Forces with Honda in Touring Class
(Toronto, Canada) -- Compass360 Racing and Durabond Racing today announced a combined effort that will field three Honda Civic Si's in the 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship season.
Building on strong results from both teams over the past few years, the Durabond/Compass360 Racing effort promises to be one of the championship contenders in the series' Touring-class.
"I've wanted to come back and have a program in CCTCC for a while now," explained Compass360's Karl Thomson, who was Rookie of the Year in the series' inaugural 2003 season. "We've been really successful since moving into Grand-Am's Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge six years ago, winning championships for Honda in 2007 and 2009. I'm really looking forward to getting back to our roots and enjoying some of the close racing the Canadian series offers."
Indeed, the team has done its best to sign what is arguably the strongest driver line-up in Touring class. Durabond Racing's Anthony Rapone will return in the #72 Honda after losing an extremely close battle for the 2009 championship, and looks to take the top Touring spot as his brother Andre did, winning the Canadian championship in 2008. Andrew Danyliw, who raced successfully in regional sprints before moving to the Continental Challenge, comes off a strong second-place finish at Barber Motorsports Park a few weeks ago, and will pilot the #73, while Thomson, who has won five Continental Tire races and was runner-up in the 2007 Grand-Am Championship, will take the helm of the #71 Civic Si.
"We think this combination of talents is going to make our program stronger than ever," said Durabond's Andre Rapone. "I'm going to take a break from driving this year to focus on management, and we've got a great team led by Ken 'Turtle' Lau, who's worked with both Durabond and Compass360 over the past few seasons." Indeed, the drivers are extremely confident in the crew which includes expert fabricator and car chief Sean Asselin, as well as three Touring Car champions: Michael Thornley, Scott Nicol and Andre Rapone.
"We've put all the pieces together to have three cars and drivers that can compete for race wins and the overall championship," noted Anthony. "It was a tough battle last year right to the end, and it will be the same again. This time I'm confident we'll come out on top."
Durabond/Compass360 Racing's new Hondas will debut at the CCTCC season opener at Mosport International Raceway on May 22/23.
