BMW open race

The BMW Club of Natal was established in 1989. To this end, the club organises events throughout the year. One of the most well attended events is our Top Speed Car Run of which some 8000 people attend and over 100 contestants compete. You may find the press release interesting.

THE BMW CLUB / MULTI-FIT 1000 TOP SPEED DASH TO BE HELD ON THE SOUTH COAST ON 25TH SEPTEMBER 1997. , , 25 August -- The BMW Club is again organising a high speed car run on the South Coast. The event has been sanctioned by the Department of Transport and will be run under the auspices of Motorsport SA. Brian Carr says that over 80 cars and 20 bikes participated last year which saw almost 6000 people attending. Unlike the previous year, the run will be over a 1000 metre distance and the cars will be measured both in speed and time. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded on the day. Those enthusiasts wishing to enter may do so by contacting Mark on (031) 230989. The cost to enter will be R80.00 which will entitle the competitor to approximately 3 runs on the day - time permitting. The cut off date is the 8th September and the number of entrants for this year has been restricted to 100 cars and 20 bikes. There will be 5 categories to enter into. These will be an Open class - V8 modified, nitrous and turbo's including 6 cylinders super modified, B class - V8 standard and 6 cylinder modified, C class - 6 cylinders standard and modified 4 cylinders and finally D class 4 cylinders standard. Those cars with nitrous and turbo will be moved up two classes. The bikes will have A Class - 750cc modified, B Class - above 750cc and C class - below 750cc. Brian said that he believes that the event will receive even bigger support now that the Club has established a reputation for putting on such exciting events. He said that there promises to be some of the fastest cars in South Africa. Last year was won by an Escort which topped a speed of 290KPH followed by a Porsche 930 turbo with a terminal speed of 288.6KPH and a BMW/Alfa motor Twin Turbo at 275,2KPH. The event this year will take place on the unused section of the Umtintwini Toll Plaza on the 28th September. The gates will be opened from 7.00am onwards and should end approximately 5.00pm. The site is exactly 19 kilometres from Hibberdene and will be well sign posted. There will be refreshments available. Some of the proceeds will be donated to the aged this year in keeping with the social responsibilities of the club. Brian said that all are welcome to attend. The cost of the tickets will be R20.00 per person and children under 10 years will be free. The site does not lend itself to self catering and all are asked to please support the vendors on the site. Some of the vendors in fact are service organisations and will also be donating some of their proceeds to their chosen charities.
