WORLD IS THEIR OYSTER DURING TIN TOP TITLES
"I'd be surprised if Willowbank Raceway didn't host the World's first ever class-legal five second pass in Top Doorslammer during the Tin Top Titles on April 23/24."
A bold statement maybe, but as one of Queensland and Australia's most accomplished drag racers, Gary Phillips is credentialed enough to be able to predict such an International mark can be set in his home state.
It was only recently that he himself managed to slice six-hundredths of second off his personal best time over the quarter mile in the highly competitive category.
His newly acquired quickest elapsed time of 6.03 seconds was set in Perth during the Westernationals and was just a smidgen shy of current Top Doorslammer leader Ben Bray's National mark of 6.024 seconds.
The schedule for both drivers, among a handful of potential record breakers is the Queensland Times Tin Top Titles on April 23/24, which features the outstanding talents of Jack Daniels Top Doorslammer and Travelaire Tours Pro Stock competitors who'll be gunning for Australian Championship points.
"If we continue to experience the sort of cooler weather that we've been blessed with of late in and around the Ipswich area everything should click and someone's bound to claim something that has eluded Top Doorslammer drivers for some time now," added Phillips.
"Willowbank Raceway is perfectly set for the record breaker, it was great for us in Perth and the six-0 was something we were shooting for.
"Even though the weather was looking terrible we changed a few things on the Lucas Oil Products Studebaker and it turned out to be a good deal so the entire team was stoked with the result.
"We're currently running second in the Championship so generally the entire season has been a good one but come the Tin Top Titles the race will be on for that first five second pass .. and that's something the driver has for life."
The recent corporate support boom in Australian drag racing has meant many top line drivers and riders have been able to compete in numerous Group One categories throughout the regular season.
But during the April showdown all the top contenders in Top Doorslammer will enjoy the luxury of harnessing their energy into one of the most fiercely contested brackets of quarter mile racing.
The Jack Daniel's Top Doorslammer and Travelaire Tours Pro Stock double-header boasts the crème de la crème of Queensland racers, all looking to assert their dominance in what has become one of the great traditions of the sport.
Top Doorslammer heavyweights Phillips, Ben Bray and defending champion Brett Stevens are all credited with notable performances in other categories during this season.
Phillips and Stevens in particular have shown their versatility by claiming outright leader status in Top Alcohol and Top Bike respectively.
Both are well poised in the top three of Top Doorslammer behind young gun Ben Bray who has also instigated some impressive performances in Top Alcohol.
"Brett actually defeated me in the semi-final when he turned in a 6.13 second pass in Perth so he's also running hot," conceded Phillips.
"But there's no doubting Ben has a handle on the championship lead and deservedly so as the most consistent driver this season and carrying on from his hard charging run last season.
"But it makes it interesting for the spectators at the Tin Top Titles because the race is well and truly on to see who really does boast the quickest car and that five second barrier is still out there.
"For me it'll be a lot easier running one car and even better if nothing goes wrong.
"Whenever you have dramas and are competing in multiple brackets you then need to evaluate and make a decision where your focus has to be aimed towards.
"With the growth in Top Doorslammer it really has become an open show and it's important to be performing strongly right from the start.
"The crowd can really get into it even during Saturday's qualifying rounds where everyone will be gunning for a top eight spot.
"The first two runs will be the best two on the Saturday night and that's where I think we will see the elusive five recorded."
