Inclement weather conditions being experienced throughout South-East Queensland have forced the cancellation of the 39th iTEL Community Telco Drag Racing Nationals at Willowbank Raceway.
In a disappointing end to a meeting that had promised so much, particularly during last night's Group One qualifying session, Raceway officials were left with no alternative but to abandon the meeting.
But rather than focus on the disappointing outcome, officials remain upbeat and a unanimous decision to reschedule the remainder of the meeting on January 1, 2005 is expected to pay big dividends.
"The fans have always been at the forefront of our decision making process and all Sunday ticketholders of the iTEL Nationals will have their tickets redeemable on January 1," said Willowbank Raceway General Manager Harry Rowsell.
"We'll have a full package of Group One professional categories on show and it will now be up to those who hadn't already planned their News Year's Day activities to get in early in the hope of snaring the remaining Grandstand seating.
"Irrespective, we have a massive viewing mound that will also be well utilised and being in the middle of school holidays this will provide a great day out for the entire family."
The mood among drivers will be even more intense during the rescheduled meeting as only those who have already qualified will remain a chance of claiming the Gold Christmas Trees in each category.
Last night the Top Fuelers showed why the popularity of the sport is growing at such a rapid rate, with all qualifiers treating those in attendance to some high speed thrills across the quarter mile.
Among many of the professional categories just hundredths of a second separated the top campaigners and with a six week lay-off before January 1, drivers will be pumped up for a big showing.
"Last night we witnessed some of the fastest and quickest side-by-side Top Fuel passes seen at Willowbank for some time," added Rowsell.
"With the cut-throat format of eliminators and the valuable iTEL Nationals title up for grabs we are going to see some exciting action to bring in the New Year.
"Add to the mix valuable ANDRA Australian Championship points are up for grabs and the iTEL Nationals will be showcasing a Tournament of Champions under a winner takes all schedule.
The 39th iTEL Nationals enjoys the continued support of the Queensland Government through Queensland Events.
