Queensland's Willowbank Raceway has made a timely confirmation of its 2004/05 season calendar as Father's Day approaches, with an action packed year-long program being launched on November 5-7 during the iTEL Community Telco Australian Drag Racing Nationals.
Promoted as the Tournament of Champions, the Ipswich facility is likely to play host to more than 500 drivers during the iTEL Nationals, each representing all six professional categories and supported by a host of its own Track Champions.
Back to kickstart their new campaigns and hoping to gain the ideal start to their respective ANDRA Group One Australian Championship title defenses will be Queensland's own Gary Phillips (Top Alcohol), Brett Stevens (Top Doorslammer), Tony Wedlock (Pro Stock) and Daniel Peatey (Pro Stock Bike) along with Western Australian Jay Upton in Top Bike.
Top Fuel will create a great deal of interest with the dominant Cowin Racing Team recently relocating their operation to the United States, which leaves it an open lottery as to who will become the major force in Australian drag racing's number one category.
"There's certainly been a significant resurgence in the sport at all levels and that's brought about an influx of genuine contenders for all ANDRA Group One titles," said Willowbank Raceway General Manager Harry Rowsell.
"From all reports we may very well see the largest contingent of Top Fuel competitors ever assembled at Willowbank Raceway during the iTEL Nationals and that's great news for the sport.
"We capped off last season with significant spectator support during the Winternationals and now with bolstered entertainment assured at the iTEL Nationals the event is bound to be something special."
Further contributing to the warranted hype surrounding the new season at Willowbank Raceway has been the activity in other areas of the Group One spectrum.
Rumours persist that many formerly retired identities may make a welcome return to the quarter mile strip, which will further bolster competition throughout 2004/05.
That, coupled with the acquisition of a handful of newcomers to the fold can only mean stiffer opposition, ultimately contributing to a greater spectacle during the major events.
"Following the iTEL Nationals we move straight into our New Year's celebrations with Top Fuel and Top Alcohol returning to take centre stage, on what will be a huge family day on January 1," added Rowsell.
"March 12 signals an opportunity to gather valuable Track Championship points for Willowbank regulars, then it's on to the annual Top Doorslammer/Pro Stock extravaganza during the Tin Top Titles on April 23/24.
"Before you know it we'll be prepping the track in readiness for Australia's biggest and best drag racing showdown during the Winternationals on June 10/11/12 and by that time all racers will have their cars at peak performance.
"Of course activity on the Street Series and Test 'n' Tune front will remain a constant throughout the year and the official season warm-up is scheduled for October 9."
Many new and exciting initiatives are being planned for Willowbank Raceway and these will be announced as the season progresses.
The 39th iTEL Nationals enjoys the continued support of the Queensland Government through Queensland Events.
