Team Petronas Primax has confirmed their participation in the first Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS) event in Malaysia this season. The team will be fielding two Honda Civics next weekend to compete in the FIA-sanctioned Asian Touring Car Championship (ATCC) which will be driven by local up-and-coming racing star, Mohammed Fariqe B. Hairuman and his team mate, Michael Briggs.
The 18 year-old Fariqe, from Johor Bahru, joined the outfit early this year and has received extensive testing and training programme including a two months stint in New Zealand driving hundreds of laps in an array of vehicles including Formula Ford, Holden (GM) Commodore and even the venerable Australian HQ Holden.
Brash and excited as he may understandably appear, Fariqe's ambition is to carry his national flag proudly to win the race amongst some of the leading drivers in Asia.
Apart from Team Petronas Primax, ATCC will see top Asian drivers' participation including 2001 ATCC Champion (Division 2), Kenny Lo of Knights Motorsport with his team mates and current championship leader, Paul Chan. Kenny and his other team mate, Lam Wai Hung will be facing an uphill task to prepare their Alfa Romeo 156 which had technical problems and damaged in a shunt respectively as a result of their last outing in Subic Bay, Philippines.
Other top drivers including Taichiro Ohnishi from Japan and C.Nattavude from Thailand driving their Peugeots of WK Longman Racing. With a total of 18 participants from 8 countries, ATCC is fast gaining popularity and is widely regarded as the most challenging touring car event in Asia.
AFOS will also feature the popular FIA-sanctioned Asian Formula 2000 (AF2000) series and Porsche Asian Challenge (PAC).
In Malaysia, the series will once again run at all three circuits starting with Johor Circuit followed by Batu Tiga Speedway Circuit * (30th June - 1st July) and Sepang International Circuit (21st - 22nd July).
