Race Day Action!
Nattavude Wins Round 11 and 12, closer to securing 2001 ATCC Div 1 Championship, while Takayuki Fujita claims 2001 ATCC Div 2 Championship with wins in Korea
C Nattavude reconfirmed his status as one of Asia's best touring car drivers, with two convincing wins at this weekend's Round 11 & 12 of the Asian Touring Car Championship (ATCC) races at the Everland Speedway Circuit in Korea, today.
Nattavude, in the Division 1 ATCC Peugeot 306, started second on the grid for the Round 11 race. He easily passed pole position starter Lo Ka Chun and took advantage of a clear track in front of him to pull away from the pack. Nattavude was in a league of his own, and was never seriously challenged by local drivers Oh Il Ki and Kim Han Bong who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
"It was a good race, although I did not have a good start because the 2nd position grid was not on the racing line and was quite slippery. I went into Turn 1 very strongly, and managed to take the lead. But I would like to comment on how fast the Korean drivers were. They are very good drivers and I look forward to competing with them again in the future," said Nattavude.
Oh said later, "I'm very happy to finish 2nd in the first ever Asian Touring Car Championship race in Korea. The ATCC is an international event, and I find it very competitive. I think I could do better if I had more time to practice with my car which has been modified to comply with the ATCC regulations. I hope to race again in the ATCC next year." His thoughts were echoed by fellow countryman Han Bong. "There are many skillful drivers in the ATCC, and I hope to be able to race with them again soon."
In the Division 2 race, Takayuki Fujita is now closer than ever to claim the 2001 ATCC Div 2 Championship, by virtue of winning both Rounds 11 and 12. Fujita was obviously very pleased, and even announced his intention of competing in the ATCC Division 1 next year.
"I might just do it if I win the championships," he said before the start of the Round 11 race. "I am thinking of buying a new car, and it depends on the budget. I will have a strong chance to do that if I win the Div 2 championship this year. So I'm really looking forward to the race."
Fujita could not contain after his wins, as he is now only 5 points short of securing the championships this year. I look forward going into the next rounds in Zhuhai and Macau and hopefully win there in convincing style. I am very happy for my team (Ao's Racing) also for doing a great job this weekend," said Fujita.
While Nattavude and Fujita celebrated, Paul Chan was just glad the weekend is over and is looking forward to the next event in Zhuhai. "Everything in Korea was great, except my car. Because of the nature of the track, we did not have the correct gear ratios for this circuit. It's the shortest circuit of the championship, even shorter than Bira, and is very twisty. But otherwise its been a great weekend, and all the data we've collected here should help towards homologating the gearbox for next year," Paul said.
