Qualifying Day Action!

Lo Ka Chun Claims First Pole Position in Round 11, Nattavude Takes Round 12 Pole Position

Lo Ka Chun from Hong Kong, took pole position in the Round 11 of the ATCC Division 1 qualifying session this morning, with a time of 1:11.337. Ka Chun said later, "It was a good session, although I admit all I was trying to do today is to try to conserve my tyres as best as I can. The car was going very well, and I'm happy to be here today."

C Nattavude, who is currently leading the championship points, came in 0.3 seconds behind Ka Chun. He was obviously having some sort of problems with his car, and he confirmed it during the post-race press conference after that. "The car just didn't feel right, and half way through my session, the engine started to overheat and I decided not to try to push for pole position now. Things should be better for the next qualifying session later," Nattavude said.

As expected, the Koreans put up a strong challenge for the regular ATCC boys. Oh Il Ki in his Hyundai Tiburon drove a convincing session to qualify third for Round 11, with a time of 1:11.812. And the surprise of the day was when he bettered his time and clocked 1:11.578 to qualify 2nd in the Round 12 race.

"I was having problems initially because I had to carry additional weight to comply with the regulations. But I'm happy to be qualifying from where I am, and I have to thank my team for the great support. I look forward to racing tomorrow," said Il Ki.

Nattavude managed to overcome his car's problems for the Round 12 qualifiers, and claimed pole in the session, which plagued many drivers because many drivers suddenly decided to go out on the circuit at the same time.

In the Division 2 qualifying session, Takayuki Fujita took full control of the situation in Korea, claiming both the pole positions for tomorrow. He is now only two races away from sealing the 2001 ATCC Division 2 Championship, and he looks set to do just that this weekend.

The Round 12 Division 2 qualifying session was also a very good one for Ao's Racing, when all three drivers occupied the top 3 grid positions for tomorrow. Fujita led the pack, followed by Ao Chi Hong and Lee Tat Cheong. Chi Hong said later, "It's a great result for the team, and on my part I will push very hard tomorrow to try to keep the momentum going. The road is a little dusty though, but I do not think that would be a problem for tomorrow." <pre> Results
