Zhuhai International Circuit, China. 19 October 2001

Denis Lian was right on the pace during today's official untimed practice session, after a terribly frustrating week for the Singaporean. He came to Zhuhai much earlier than the rest of the competitors, where he tested for another Formula team and managed to learn the track a little. But his advantage was soon leveled, when he got into his Team EZ-Import AF2000 car and found it to be dogged with a misfiring problem. His mechanics took the whole of Thursday and the better part of Friday to locate and to fix the problem.

"I only had about 8 full laps in the AF2000 car prior to today's evening practice session," said Denis. "But thank goodness, that problem is fixed and I'm pleased with the times I set this evening. I was right up there with the front runners, third or fourth fastest behind the new Japanese GT driver who is here for a "practice race" ahead of the Macau GP, and Karun Chandhok," Denis said.

"I believe I can clock a good qualifying lap tomorrow on fresher tyres. Because I was not confident the misfiring problem was completely fixed, I decided to go out on used (scrubbed) tyres.

"I was told by the Michelin people that on this track, new tyres will be faster on a hot track, while a scrubbed tyre will be faster if the track temperature is cooler. As today was very hot and I was on used tyres, I am confident I will be able to clock a very quick lap for the qualifying sessions tomorrow," explained Denis.
